Frequently Asked Questions
Q: "Who are you?"
A: "I was born in Brighton, on the south coast of England, and spent most of my teenage years playing drums in various local bands.
I went to Liverpool University, where I studied English Lit & Drama; it was also there that I got interested in electronics and sound design.
After I left University I did a Masters Degree in "Music & Sound Design" at Central School Of Speech & Drama and after graduating I worked as a freelance sound designer & composer in London for 4 years before moving to Switzerland in 2004.
Q: "Where did you study 'Graphic Design'?"
A: "I didn't. I studied 'Photography' for A-level; which, in those pre-Photoshop days, meant getting one's hands dirty in the darkroom - so I learnt not only Photographic technique but also printing and framing techniques as well.
The Graphic Design stuff started of as work for friends and family and spread from there."
Q: "Why is your website called 'Noisy Image'?"
A: From 2004 onwards I had begun to 'branch out' from just sound design and music to doing short films, documentaries, film editing and graphic design and I wanted another "label" other than just "Rupert Lally" to release my work under. So along with my wife, Heidi, Barny Livingston and Christoph Garobbio, I started "Noisy Image" with the idea being that we'd function as a collective - each releasing projects under that name.
That worked ok for about a year and during that time we produced several short films and documentaries and scored some tv & theatre shows; however, after a while everyone got busy with their own work and it was only me releasing stuff under the name.
So, in 2006, I decided to redesign the website from the ground up. The result being what you see before you and now "Noisy Image" is just the banner under which I work as a Graphic Designer & Sound Artist."
Q: "Are you the same "Rupert Lally" that did the theme music for "ITV @ The Movies" etc.?
A: "Yep. That's me. I also did the theme music for the Reading Festival broadcasts in 2004 & 2005, respectively."
Q: "Where can I get hold of a copy of one of your cds?"
A: "At the moment only through me, as they were produced in fairly limited quantities to send out to friends and record labels. I still have copies left though, so email me for details."
Q: "What equipment do you use?"
A: "These days its a Mac laptop running Ableton Live and Native Instruments' "Kontakt 2", plus Photoshop for the graphic work, obviously. Although I do also still use "Sound Forge" on the PC now and again for certain things. "
Q: "I'm a sound design student, can I interview you for my thesis?"
A: Sure. Send the questions to me via my email and I will try to answer them as quickly as possible."
